You can’t judge a book by its cover…
There was a recent episode if Britain’s Got Talent during which a 47 year old frumpy-looking lady appeared on the stage to perform. Just one look was all it took. This lady was destined for failure. She would never make it. The panel of judges rolled their eyes as she introduced herself and stated her ambition to become a famous singer. How could someone so plain become famous? Then she opened her mouth to sing. Out of this frumpy looking 47 year old unemployed lady came the voice of an angel. The crowd immediately started to applaud and the judges faces turned from disdain to amazement. They discovered that appearances can be deceiving.
The same is true about a house. All houses look pretty much the same on the outside but it’s what’s on the inside that matters. What’s between the sheetrock and the exterior siding?
We’ve been told that most of the heat in our homes escapes through the ceiling since we know that heat rises. It may surprise you to know that is not true. Most of the heat from your home escapes through the side walls. You see, heat always migrates to the cold whether it be the walls, floor, or ceiling, And since the walls constitute the highest total amount of surface area in your home, they naturally dissipate the most heat.
It is important to consider the insulation value of the walls and the amount of air infiltration. The greatest energy savings can be achieved by walls with tight fitting insulation and sealed to stop air infiltration. The best solution is to fill the wall cavity with foam since it not only gives total coverage but also seals all areas against air infiltration.
You see you can’t judge a book by its cover or a house by its appearance. It’s what’s on the inside that counts.
Oh yes, the reason ceilings get the highest amount of insulation is that it is the easiest to reach and you can stick your head into the attic and observe the insulation. It makes good sales sense to put the most money where it can be seen.

Good article, Gordon. Do you advocate foam insulation then??
